₹1 Lakh penalty and two years jail term for Not Wearing Face Mask in Jharkhand

As per latest updates, the Jharkhand Cabinet on Wednesday approved Jharkhand Contagious Disease Ordinance under which penalty up to ₹1 lakh and jail term up to 2 years can be imposed against violators of preventive measures of COVID-19 like not wearing masks in public places and spitting in public. Soren administration’s decision comes amidst a steady increase in the number of coronavirus cases in the state.

Jharkhand in the last 24 hours reported 405 new cases of COVID-19, while two more people died due to the disease, as per the bulletin issued by the state government. The state’s death toll stands at 67.  There are 3,845 active cases in the state, with the infection tally rising to 7166.

The decision came as the cases in Jharkhand are witnessing an upward trend leaving no place for patients in government-run hospitals. In view of the shortage of space, the state government is reportedly mulling to make makeshift COVID-19 facilities in private hospitals and banquet halls to use them as isolation wards.

Meanwhile, Jharkhand Assembly Secretariat has been sealed July 27 for disinfection after reports said that some staff and members of the Assembly have tested positive for COVID-19. All meetings of the Assembly committees will remain suspended till July 31 with immediate effect.

On Wednesday, Jharkhand BJP MLA C P Singh confirmed that he has been infected by coronavirus. Singh is the third MLA in the state to have been tested positive for coronavirus. Earlier, Drinking and Sanitation Minister Mithilesh Thakur and JMM MLA Mathura Mahato tested positive for the highly infectious disease.

Earlier, the Bihar government had decided to impose a fine of ₹50 on those found not wearing masks at offices and public places. A notification issued by the health department of the state to this effect on July 3, under the ‘Bihar Epidemic Diseases COVID-19 Regulation 2020’, also said that people flouting the norm would be given two masks free of cost to motivate them to wear face covers.
